The Contract

We have yet to get any response from the Mayor's office in regards to our contract. At this time the proposed 0,0,2,2 still stands but to get any of the other suggested amenities that we have discussed we have to await approval from the Mayor's office. These items will not be awarded in arbitration.

The Latest

First I would like to thank all of you who participated in the rally at the CAYMC last week. As some of you may have seen in the Commissioners address to the City Council it appears that IF THE CITY COUNCIL VOTES (vote due by 5/24) in favor of the Commissioner's recommendation that there will be approximately 17 persons laid off. That number did not include approx 7-9 persons who are due to retire in the very near future, those positions are not considered vacated until those individuals have officially been taken off of the active rosters. There were also comments made inregards to the closing of several fire stations some of which may impact the associated EMS Unit. We have just received the letter from the Dept. in regards to the augmented seniority roster in which they will schedule a meeting with our Unit to review the document. For those of you this may impact PLEASE BE ADVISED THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN ADDRESSED AT THIS POINT WHICH WILL DECREASE THE TOTAL FROM 17 TO LESS THAN 10. We will continue to work to have any number listed for proposed lay off reduced as much as possible. There are several things we can comment on at this point;

PLEASE REMEMBER AT THIS POINT THIS IS MERELY A PROPOSAL AND MUST BE APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL WHO CAN APPROVE IT AS IS OR MODIFY IT. We will continue to obtain as much CREDIBLE information as we can prior to meeting with the membership.

The Unofficial EMS Website

We are aware that everyone in this country is afforded the right to speak freely, and vent there concerns. Although I have visited this sight several times and registered as a user, I do not feel that it's existence has been healthy for our membership and has led to more unfounded rumors and confusion as well as personal attacks against our members. It is for these reasons that we request our members show solidarity and refuse to visit this site.

Supplies

I have recently had a discussion with the supply section. We must be mindful of what we use and how we use it. I was informed that we have spent thousands of dollars for replacement B/P cuffs for the monitor, monitor cables, and latex gloves. We have several people who feel it necessary to use 5-6 pair of gloves per run. We must also remember that the monitor has a designated position within the rig, several have been damaged due to falling from the bench seat or some other position within the ambulance, the position of the monitor is for the safety of the crew, and to provide access or viewing capability while the pt. is on the stretcher. They ask that we be mindful of these things while we are busy with our day.

The Mayors Budget Reduction Plan

As everyone is aware the Mayor has submitte his budget reduction proposals to the City Council. In his summation he proposed the layoff of 38 EMS Technicians as well as the removal of 9 positions (7 paramedic, 2 basic), and the closing of the ECHO Units. Since that date we have met with the Commissioner as well as GM Campbell to discuss the proposed layoffs as well as how it will impact the division. It is our hope that the removal of vacancies will decrease the amount of individuals affected. First we must understand that this is simply a proposal and must first be approved by the Council before implementation. We have sent letters to both the City Council President as well as the Mayor's office and are awaiting the ability to speak on our behalf in regards to these proposed cuts. We must not allow this to impede our delivery of service to the citizen, nor our proffesionalism.

Vacation Time

The vacation time has come out on this check. Be advised that for those of you with less than 2 years seniority be advised you must first complete 1600 work hours before receiving your full 126 hr allotment. For those of us with over 10 years the system will only accept the 126 hrs the remainder of your time must be put in manually, AFTER the first 126 hrs have appeared on your check then the remainder can be put into the system. So if all goes right it should appear on your next check.

Retirement

As we enter the 33nd year of EMS retirement has now become a very real, yet confusing end to some of you. We are in the process of getting as much ACCURATE information as we can relative to retirement in an attempt to help those who are eligible. I will be scheduling a retirement meeting with those of us who have attained 11 or more years of service to explain as much as we can (dates will be forthcoming).

Retirement Buyout Suggestions

There has been recent discussions generated in regards to a buyout package for those individuals with the ability to retire or who are over 50 years of age. Please be advised that prior to any arrangement being approved it must first go before the City Council, then be negotiated. The City will maintain the right to exclude certain employees or groups from this option. Even if there was a plan approved by the City Council this will not be an overnight process and if the City were to find it financially unfeasible they maintain the right to pull it any time. The decision to retire is based on multiple reasons make sure they are based on whats best for you and your family at that time not the suggestions of proposals.

CONTRACT

There has been little movement on the contract at this time, the Mayors office has requested from labor relations the list of units still awaiting contracts (last monday). We are expecting some phone calls in regards to the contract within the next few weeks and we will keep the membership updated as much as possible.

Retractions to the Code 1000

We would like to correct some information that was printed in the recent edition of the Code 1000. First and foremost I would like to extend an apology to Technicians P. McNamara and T. Robinson who should have been acknowledged for over 20 years of active service time.
There was also an error in regards to the HEPA mask THE MASK IS NOT A ONE TIME USE AND IS NOT TO BE WORN BY THE PATIENT FOR ANY REASON! The HEPA mask that you were given has been fit tested for you and you only and is for your protection. The provider has detailed it as a multi use item not a one time use. There were also several grievances that were not included in the grievance report whcich were JKJ-04-22 (TS) charges awaiting 4th step response, JKJ-04-23 (RM) charges awaiting 4th step response, JKJ-03-12 Policy attendance control awaiting arb dates, JKJ-05-02 (RW) tuition reimbursement awaiting 4th step response. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone.
Sincerely,
EMMTTA Rep
